Tutorial1: Joomla front end edit

How edit content from the front end

There are basically two ways to manage content articles (pages) with Joomla:

a) from the front end site, logging as authorized "manager"
b) from the back end administration panel

  • Front end
edit from the front end
  • Back end
edit from back end

As first task with Joomla, we will easily, from the front end (normal URL-site) edit a pre-created item (page).

That´s the case, for example, when at the development beginning, the site has navigation links, but  just with already created "under construction" pages: textual, graphic and image content is still not completely ready, and some new element will be produced and published  everytime.

Logging with the user ID and pass received from the administrator, it will appear an additional user menu and a small icon, left by the title. For editing this pre-created item, you will click on the small editing icon, and access the editor.

There, are 3 blocks, let have a look:

1)Title and Editor

Here you can manage title and edit or add text, images, links, with the easy to use WYSYWYG editor. When you´re done, you can save or cancel and leave.

2) Publishing

Here you can manage section, category, date and other publishing details of the article.

3) Metadata

Finally, let have a look at the metadata block, here you can input description and keyword for that page, very useful when you, with all content ready, start to work on the Search Engine Optimization.

1)Title and Editor

For now, we focus on the basic tools that we need for text editing, image publishing, formatting, linking, from the point of view of someone who does´nt have any knowledge of html or other web programming language. Below the Title: field and the Save and Cancel buttons, there are the three editor´s tool bars. The first bar is dedicated to text formatting tools: here you can make a text bold, give him an alignment, a style and a preformatted size. The second bar has the tool to format lists, indents, insert links and images. From the third, we´ll use for now just the horizontal ruler and the special characters. Each icon has a help text, appearing by rollover.

After you digit a text, you could adjust the alignment,  make some word or paragraph bold, or italic or underlined, choose some pre-formatted pattern ( Heading 1, 2...). The "styles" choose, better for now don´t use it, leave it for the style sheet (CSS).
Important: if you are working with "word" or any word processor software, and want copy and paste your text into the joomla editor, you have to paste it at first in windows "notepad" or a similar basic text editor, to loose the formatting data, and after you can copy from there and paste the text unformatted into joomla editor field. The general page style sheet will give the right format.

Below the editor field, there are generally four buttons: specially Image, is very useful to publish images, giving you also the possibility for uploading.

Attention: if you don´t have in your editor window any tool or icons, contact your administrator: needs install or enable the WYSYWYG joomla editor.

2) Publishing

Now we change to the "publishing" block. Here you can set the publishing details, like the state (published or not), access level (public or not), publishing time, author... also you can act on the sections and category, but, assuming you now are working on pre-created articles, we leave it like it is.

3) Metadata

Here you will manage the metadata for this article, description and keywords, very usefull when you, with all content ready, start to work on the Search Engine Optimization.

Of course this quick tutorial give you just an introduction, better the first time you act on the site under administrator supervision. Anyway, the first step is done, now let´s go a bit deeper... to the back end panel.
